History

  • The Department of Physical Education in Rajaram College was established in the year 1881.
  • Since 1948 Prof. Gajanan. Narayanrao Purandare was the first P.T. Instructor (then the Designation) and the Head of this department, who later transferred to Ismail Yusuf College, Mumbai in 1965.
  • He was one of the coaches who trained Late Shri. Khashaba D Jadhav, a wrestler who earned the first Bronze Medal in Individual sports Wrestling for India at the Olympic Games held Helsinki in 1952.
  • Thereafter, Prof. Sadashiv. Baburao Ghugare (1957 to 1985) and Prof. Shankar Bangali Mali (1965 to 2001) were working in this department, who in due course became Head of this department consecutively.
  • In 1975, a post of Lady P. T. Instructor was specially created in this college and MS. Shaila Aurangabadkar was initially appointed to that post, who later left the job. To that post then in 1977 Dr. Nayana Vijaysingh Aljapurkar (previously Ms. Nayana Kakrambe) was appointed, she took over the charge of this Department as a Head in the year 2001.
  • After the retirement of Prof. S. B. Mali, on the vacant post Dr. Sharad Sadashivrao. Hunswadkar, who was working as a P.T. Instructor at Elphinstone College, Mumbai since 1979, has joined this college in July 2001 by transfer.
